Cox Green Community Centre is set to come to life as a model train exhibition rolls into town this weekend (Saturday 6).

Hosted by Marlow, Maidenhead and District Model Rail Club (MMDMRC), the event features 10 different model layouts of different sizes, complete with sounds and moving parts.

The annual showcase is the main fundraising opportunity for the club, which meets weekly at its base in White Waltham Airfield, and enables it to continue to operate.

Club chairman, Mark Pollard said: “Anybody who's interested in the hobby or wants to start off in the hobby can come and see what we do.

“I always say: ‘I would love to draw or paint,’ but this is an art form too, for anyone who wants to show off some artistic flare.”

Mark’s own piece, Old Elm Park, has been featured at national exhibitions and in the Hornby model magazine. It depicts a fictional engine park in Reading.

Saturday will be the first time it has been on display in Maidenhead.

Other exhibits include an American inspired scene entitled ‘Glacier’, an exhibit of a Czech railway, a Scottish railway in autumn and a period model of Marlow station.

There will also be a set for children to try out being model train driver, in addition to opportunity for visitors to purchase model train pieces and hobby books from traders.

For Mark, model trains have been a long-standing passion since he took up the hobby following an interest sparked while undertaking his Duke of Edinburgh Award.

“I joined the club when I was a teenager. I’ve been a member all that time and have never really given it up,” he said.

“Now my son's in his 20s and he’s actually got his set there [at Saturday’s event] as well, so its rubbed off on him.”

Tickets for the exhibition, which takes place between 10.30am and 4pm, are available on the door with prices set at £5 for adults, £3 for children and £13 for families.
