HENLEY Tennis Club wrapped up their winter season with the ladies’ side winning promotion from Division 8 of the Berkshire League.
Henley Ladies’ first pair, Fiona Huggard and Rowan, Hampson, defeated Windsor’s first pair 6-3, 6-2 and then repeated the scoreline against Windsor’s second pair to give the visitors two victories.
The second pair of Lizzie Miles and Ana Roberts provided the day’s drama.

With the result still on the line, everything came down to the final rubber against Windsor’s first pair. Once again the match swung dramatically. Roberts and Miles lost the opening set 6-2 before turning things around to take the second 6-1. In the deciding tie-break they held their nerve, winning 10-6 to secure both the match and promotion for Henley.
Henley A finished their Oxfordshire Division 1 campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating Goring A
7-1.
With several other fixtures still to be played in the league, the team will have to wait to find out their final standings. Henley B lost out 5-3 in their final match of the season at home to Witney.
Henley’s Chris Ward and Peter Fennelly made a strong start, earning a valuable draw against Witney’s second pair. Andrew Grant and Simon Perry faced a tough challenge against Witney’s experienced first pair and were defeated
2-0.
Trailing 3-1 overall, Henley needed a strong finish in the second round of rubbers. Witney’s first pair proved difficult to break down, beating Henley’s Fennelly and Ward 2-0.
Grant and Perry dug deep and produced a 2-0 victory against their opponents to round off the afternoon.
