TWO more town centre burglaries this week led to fresh calls for closed-circuit television in Henley — and the town being dubbed a “soft target” for criminals. In one raid, thieves broke into the offices of Hamptons International Estate Agency in New Street and loaded all the computer hardware, worth thousands of pounds, into a van. In a second raid a window was smashed and a cash box with more than £1,000 was taken from Chiltern Taxis in Greys Road.

Perpetual, Henley’s largest employer, was yesterday on the point of being sold to US fund management company Amvescap in a deal said to be worth £1 billion. Chairman Martyn Arbib and deputy chairman Roger Cornick were thrashing out the details of the sale.
