Kids invited to flex creative muscles at Dorney horticulture show

The Dorney Horticultural Society Annual Show is set to return on Saturday, August 31 in Dorney Village Hall – with a special section for youngsters to flex their creative muscles.

Now in its 69th year, the event is a chance to showcase people’s proud skills in fruit, veg and flower growing, as well as domestic creations and adult handicrafts.

In past events, these have included jams, pastries, dining table floral decorations, handmade clocks, photography and knitting – among just a few examples of creative entries among the expected array of parsnips and pumpkins.

Typically, there are100-200 exhibits or more each year.

Everyone is welcome to attend the free-to-enter event, which has a special children's section. Event organisers are always keen for youngsters to get involved in the show.

In the children's section, under-eights can submit drawings of a dinosaur or their dream garden, decorate two gingerbread men, enter a handicraft or a decorated pebble, make an edible necklace, enter something they have grown themselves, or grow cress ‘in anything beginning with the letter T.’

For children eight to 16, they can also enter a handicraft or something they’ve grown themselves, draw their dream garden or their best friend, enter a model made from recycled materials, make a bug house, decorate a flowerpot, or make ‘the best decorate paper airplane.’

Exhibits registration is from 10am to 11am, and the exhibition opens to all at 2.15pm, with prizes presented at 2.30pm.
