Nicholsons Centre toy reindeer racing raises cash for charity

There was plenty of festive cheer on display in Maidenhead as Christmas shoppers dug deep for charity.

A toy reindeer racing event staged by the Rotary Club of Maidenhead Bridge in the Nicholsons Centre on Saturday attracted about 150 visitors and raised at least £300 for the national charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

Competitors had to select a reindeer sleigh driven by a snowman, Father Christmas, a penguin or a fellow reindeer.

These were then attached to a length of string, which had to be wound in as quickly as possible down a 6m track.

Perhaps predictably, organisers reported that the reindeer sleigh pilot was the most successful and popular choice.

The event was also visited by a representative of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People – Selwin, a 14-week-old Labrador puppy currently being trained by the charity.

Speaking afterwards, club president Adam Hunter said: “It was a very successful event and it was great to see so many happy smiling faces and kids enjoying themselves, competing with all the parents, grandparents and siblings.

“And thanks to all the Maidenhead residents who have been supporting us today and throughout the year.”
