Open verdict in inquest of man found dead near car park

The parents of a man found dead in a Maidenhead street have said the ‘worst thing’ is they will never know the exact details of his death.

The body of Peter Moffatt (pictured) was discovered near a multi-storey car park in Broadway, Maidenhead on Monday, November 14, last year.

An inquest in Windsor Guildhall this afternoon heard the 34-year-old of Springfield Park in Twyford had gone for his usual swimming session on the previous afternoon.

CCTV footage showed him stood on the seventh floor of the Maidenhead car park at about 4.30pm.

The next 15 seconds was not captured by CCTV because the camera cut away as part of a 15-second cycle. When the 15 seconds was over and the camera was live again - Peter was no longer in the shot.

His body was found the following morning and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

A post mortem concluded he died from multiple injuries.

Berkshire assistant deputy coroner Michael Burgess said it was impossible to conclude if the computer software worker 'jumped or fell' from the building.

Mr Burgess said seeing as no note was found and there had been no indication he intended to take his own life he was unable to say for certain it was a suicide.

But he reassured Mr Moffatt's parents that their sons death would have be instantaneous with no suffering.

He recorded an open verdict.

Speaking after the inquest Peter's father Steve Moffatt said: "It's difficult to understand why it happened."

Peter's mother Brenda Moffatt said: "We will never know and that's the worst thing."
