A screening of the documentary charting the role of a hero who saved hundreds of children from the Nazi death camps will be showing is showing at Norden Farm this week.

The documentary, called Nicky's Family, is showing in honour of Holocaust Memorial Day, which is on January 27.

This marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

Holocaust Memorial Day has taken place in the UK since 2001, with more than 10,000 activities taking place all across the country each year on or around January 27.

The award-winning documentary tells the remarkable story of Maidenhead resident Sir Nicholas Winton, who rescued 669 children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War.

Most of the children were Jewish and would have been rounded up to face almost certain death in Nazi camps.

Sir Nicholas did not speak about these events for half a century, and his mission to save the children only become widely known after the story was featured on That's Life in 1988.

His exploits would have probably been forgotten if his wife, 50 years later, had not found a suitcase in the attic, full of documents and transport plans.

Today the story of this rescue is known all over the world.

The 2011 film, directed by Matej Minac, has also shown at Norden Farm in previous years – and past screenings have seen Sir Nicholas Winton himself attend as guest of honour.

This year, the screening will be followed by a presentation hosted by Nick Winton, son of the late Sir Nicky.

The documentary will show tomorrow, Tuesday, January 28 at 10am in the Courtyard Theatre within Norden Farm Centre for the Arts in Altwood Road. It has a runtime of 96 mins.

Tickets cost £10.50 standard and £9.50 concession (senior, student, under 16s).

As with other cinema tickets, the price is £5 for people with a free Neon membership (for ages 16-25).
