Chippington and Dunlevy are Paralympic gold medal winners

Jeanette Chippington became the first ever paracanoe gold medal winner at a Paralympics when she narrowly won the KL1 category at the Lagoa in Rio this afternoon.

Maidenhead resident Chippington, 46, was up against strong opposition from Germany's Edina Muller, but came through to win the 200m sprint by 0.114 seconds.

The two have been rivals all year and the destination of the gold medal was in doubt until the final stroke.

For Chippington, who is a member at Longridge Boat Club in Marlow, it is her third gold and 13th overall paralympic medal for ParalympicsGB having previously been a successful swimmer in five Paralympics before she retired after Athens 2004.

Chippington only took up paracanoeing in 2011 after it was announced that the sport would make its Paralympic debut at Rio.

There was also success for another Maidenhead resident, Katie-George Dunlevy, who won gold in the women's B 30km road time trial for Paralympics Ireland alongside partner Eve McCrystal.

The duo were comfortable winners completing the course in 38mins 59.22secs, a huge 33secs ahead of their nearest challengers from Japan.

The achievement more than makes up for the duo's despair at coming fifth in the 3000m individual pursuit earlier in the Games.

After the race, a delighted Dunlevy said “We are ecstatic, over the moon. It is the culmination of four years hard work.”

She later tweeted: "Paralympic champion! Gold in time trial @Rio2016. i'm overjoyed with delight. Thank you @evemccrystal we did it!"

The duo have not finished yet as they have a road race to look forward to on Saturday.
