Maidenhead Thicket Bowls Club opened their green for the beginning of their summer bowling season on Sunday.

This tradition has continued over many, many years, and in that respect the Thicket club is unique. Most clubs in the area just decide on when the weather is favourable and just start playing, but it is a tradition with Maidenhead Thicket Bowls Club to choose a date, and plan the opening around it, which in the past has seen them open the green while it was snowing.

This years’ opening required the Ladies Captain (Sheila Gwilliam) and President (Bill Hing) to both roll their woods to the jack, the winner this year was the ladies captain Sheila.

Then down to the serious stuff, a good natured but competitive game of bowls.

There was some rain at the beginning but it didn’t dampen the enjoyment of the game, which was followed by a BBQ , raffle and lots of merriment.

“Everyone is pleased to be back outside, there is a packed schedule of play dates and an Open Day for the public to come and give it a try on the 3rd May,” said press officer Tina Scherer.
