Chennells strikes at the death to seal stunning Windsor fightback
An injury-time header from Michael Chennells gave Windsor a stunning victory at Stag Meadow this afternoon as they came from 3-0 down to beat Molesey 4-3.
Chennells rose to head home Ben Porter’s corner to put the seal on an enthralling contest which seemed for the majority of the first half would be going Molesey’s way.
The visitors dominated from the kick-off and raced into a deserved 3-0 lead but a penalty from Ryan O’Toole gave Windsor a lifeline on the stroke of half-time.
And things swung the home side’s way after the interval as goals from Chennells and O’Toole brought them level before Chennells completed the comeback in the dying stages.
Having dropped points at Hanworth Villa last weekend, Windsor were desperate to get back to winning ways in the league but they got off to a disastrous start when Molesey took the lead after just four minutes.
Full back Doug Ford found space on the right hand side of the penalty area and unleashed a stunning dipping half volley which flew over Rob Bullivant and into the far corner.
Chennells then had a great chance to equalize but his shot was well saved by Wester Young who also had to be alert to save Porter’s effort soon after.
The visitors were the better side though and it was no surprise when they doubled their lead on the half hour mark.
Ross Chalke found himself in oceans of space in the penalty area and he made no mistake with his finish across Bullivant.
Things got even better for Molesey on 36 minutes when Nemo Adams broke clear before drilling an effort into the corner from the edge of the box.
Windsor were stunned but they managed to get themselves on the scoreboard before half-time when O’Toole scored from the spot after he had been fouled in the box.
Frustrated by what he had seen before the break, boss Keith Scott made a double substitution at the interval with both Robert Lazarczuk and Ryan Ashe being introduced.
And the changes produced an immediate response when Lazarczuk curled in a delicious cross from the right which Chennells headed superbly into the top corner on 50 minutes.
Windsor were level just five minutes later when Chennells found O’Toole who beat his man before rifling a powerful finish in off the underside of the bar.
With the game now level things swung firmly the home side’s way on the hour when the visitors were reduced to 10-man following a wild lunge by Joe Pratley-Jones on Lazarczuk.
But they almost fell behind again soon after when a free-kick into the box found Adams at the back post who headed against the post with Bullivant beaten.
Having survived the scare, Windsor went in search of the winner but struggled to open up a resolute Molesey backline.
It looked like they would have to settle for a draw until Chennells met Porter’s corner in the first minute of stoppage time to complete a remarkable comeback.
