Ugly scenes as Rebels are denied late on
Ugly scenes marred the end of Slough Town's home game with AFC Hayes this afternoon as the visitors snatched a last gasp 1-1 draw with a stoppage time penalty.
Dominic Rhone's spot kick four minutes into injury-time earned Hayes an unlikely point and denied the Rebels a vital win just moments after Ben Abbey had broken the deadlock.
Then, seconds after the final whistle, a scuffle broke out behind the goal, prompting a melee which featured every player on the pitch.
With tensions running high the AFC Hayes players were told to remain on the pitch while the home supporters were asked to move away from the tunnel area and leave the ground.
The referee was keeping a close eye on everything that went on and his report will now be key if any action is taken against either club by the authorities.
It was a crazy ending to a game which failed to ever really get going, with both sides struggling to adapt to the awful conditions at Holloways Park brought about by the heavy afternoon rain.
The Rebels handed striker Lloyd Owusu a start just a day after he returned to the club and it was the 35-year-old who had the first real effort of the game when he fired over from 25 yards on 14 minutes.
He was then presented with a golden opportunity to break the deadlock just after the half hour mark but he prodded wide from inside the box after being found by Danny Burnell.
AFC Hayes rarely threatened before the break and when they did they were denied time and time again by the outstanding Alex Brown.
Their best chance came in stoppage time when Terry Smith drew a fine stop out of James Warrington and Rhone headed the follow up over.
Owusu again had a great chance to mark his debut with a goal five minutes after the interval but he shot tamely at keeper Simon Grant having broken clear.
With the pitch deteriorating as the second half wore on, chances were few and far between as both teams struggled to keep any meaningful possession.
Rebels boss Steve Bateman threw on Jerome Anderson and Abbey in place of Owusu and Burnell in a bid to force a winner and Anderson immediately tested Grant with an effort.
It looked like neither team were going to score but then, with the clock ticking over the 90 minute mark, Slough looked to have snatched the winner.
Paul Coyne sent over a corner from the right which fell to the feet of Abbey after a scramble and the Rebels substitute fired home to spark wild celebrations.
But they were to be short lived as Hayes pushed forward and were awarded a penalty after a foul on Matt Woods, Rhone making no mistake from 12 yards to salvage an unlikely point.
