Owusu hints at Slough Town return

Lloyd Owusu
Lloyd Owusu could make a return to Slough Town.

Slough Town FC legend Lloyd Owusu is back training with his former club and the striker has not ruled out a romantic return to the place where it all began.

Owusu burst onto the scene as a teenager with the Rebels in 1996 and scored 18 goals in 59 appearances before earning a move to Brentford.

Since then he has had spells with the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Reading and Adelaide United during a career which has spanned 15 years and seen almost 150 goals.

A hip injury has limited him to just a handful of appearances this season with Barnet and Hayes & Yeading but he is now fully recovered and looking to return to football.

He trained twice last week with Slough and Rebels boss Steve Bateman admits he wants the striker to return and help his side in their bid to claim the Southern Central Division title.

The 35-year-old does have other options, including a possible return to Australia, but he has not ruled out the possibility of pulling on the Slough shirt once again.

He said: “You can never say never. Anything can happen in football.

“It could be a great final swansong for me, going back to where it all started.

“I was talking to a friend of mine Darren Powell who started his career at Hampton & Richmond when I was coming through at Slough.

“He’s just signed back there until the end of the season. His career has gone full circle so why can’t mine?”

He added: “Careers always come to an end.

“I’ve had 15 great years but I still feel like I’ve got some life left in the legs

“I still think I’ve got some goals in me so we’ll see where the next chapter in my career takes me.”

Having been in the treatment room since the turn of the year, Owusu admits he was delighted to get back out on the training pitch again last week.

The forward has also been spending time with former clubs Brentford and Reading as he looks to get himself back to full fitness.

“I trained with Slough last Saturday,” he said. “I played some five-a-side with the boys and it was good.

“They are a good bunch of lads and it was good to get some football under my belt.

“I knew Jamie Jackson and Swifty (Stuart Swift) used to come to my soccer schools back in the day.

“Obviously Bates as well. He was one of the senior players when I first came through at the club.”

Since leaving the Rebels back in 1998, Owusu admits it has been hard watching from the outside as the club has fallen down the leagues.

But he is convinced they are now on their way back up and with the new stadium plans, and a youth academy being launched, he is predicting a  bright future.

“There have been some turbulent times,” he said. “Slough Town shouldn’t be where they are now.

“They could have been a League club. We had great times in the Conference so it’s sad to see the club where it is now.

“But the catchment area in Slough is great so hopefully with the new developments, the club can entice youngsters in and build on that.

“It’s a big club and I think if they were ever to get into the League they could be bigger than Wycombe.”

As well as looking to get back playing again, Owusu has also been continuing his other passion which is coaching.

He has been helping with youngsters at Langley College and the striker admits it is something he wants to expand on in the future.

He said: “I started doing it before I turned professional. I was going round the Slough schools coaching young kids which was great.

“I love doing it and it’s something I want to do more but working with older kids at the academy stage.”

And what about the possibility of going into management?

“I wouldn’t rule it out,” he said. “But I’ve always liked the idea of working as a No.2, being the liaison between the manager and the players.

“Bates was joking the other day that I could be back at Slough in two or three years managing the team.

“I don’t know about that but management is something I would think about if an opportunity ever came about.”
