Sunninghill Wheelbarrow Race 2012
Darth Vader and Jimmy Savile look-a-likes were amongst dozens who took part in a wacky wheelbarrow race in Sunninghill yesterday.
A record-breaking 29 teams entered the fancy dress one-mile dash around the village with hundreds gathering on the pavements to cheer and show their support.
The course started in Upper Village Road behind St Michael's School and finished in School Road with six pit-stops along the way where entrants downed half pints of lemonade or beer donated by local pubs.
Dressed as footballers, Swinley pub in Ascot clocked up the fastest time for the second year in a row with just over nine minutes.
But it was Princess Leia's Buns, a group of former Charters School pupils, who won the coveted fancy dress trophy by transforming a shopping trolley into a x-wing Starfighter from Star Wars.
Team member Ben Thompson, dressed as a stormtrooper, said the old school friends have been competing in the race for four years and always pick a theme from their childhood.
The 25-year-old said: "We've been doing it for a few years and it's great fun.
"This year was a little harder trying not to poke people's eyes out with our wheelbarrow but we're pretty pleased with it."
The Station Road resident added it took the team a week to build the spaceship, which featured an animated R2D2 and control panel, using car parts from a scrap yard and even his dad's car battery .
The Rotary Club of Ascot event, which is sponsored by The Ascot Race Course and Carpenters Arms in Upper Village Road as well as 35 other local businesses, raised money for the Ascot District Day Centre in Sunninghill which supports elderly people in the community.
In total they hope to match £9,000 which was raised by the event last year.
