Burnham's Christmas lights switch-on
The sound of singing rang out across the green as villagers turned out to see Burnham's Christmas lights switched on.
About 1,000 people gathered in front of Burnham Park Hall last night and were led in a countdown by Olympic hopeful Jon Boyton.
The 23-year-old hopes to represent Great Britain in the London 2012 kayak doubles 1,000m competition at Dorney Lake next summer.
Beaconsfield Rock Choir provided the entertainment with an open-air set while mince pies and mulled wine were laid on free of charge.
Addressing the crowd in Windsor Lane, Burnham Parish Council chairman Lin Hazell said: "It's absolutely amazing to see so many people here. There must be half of the village here tonight so I hope we don't disappoint you."
Boyton, who moved to Maidenhead two years ago to be nearer to Dorney Lake, is now training full-time for the Games, with the qualification event taking place in Germany in May.
"This is my first Christmas lights switch on but these things are great and something to tell the kids," he said.
"Canoeing is one of the hardest things to qualify for at the Olympics, but that's our aim. There's still a long road ahead, but it's a big thing for us and it's a great advantage having trained on the course at Dorney Lake."
