Weekly recycling collections are on their way

Weekly recycling collections will begin across the borough from April.

From April 2 Wokingham Borough Council (WBC) launches its new seven-year waste partnership with Veolia Environmental Services and a recycling reward scheme with Recyclebank.

Weekly general waste collections will be maintained but there will be weekly kerbside recycling collections and the fortnightly opt-in garden waste collection scheme will be extended to every borough home.

Cllr Gary Cowan, executive member for environment, said: “We have to do something to reduce the amount of waste that we throw away. The new scheme will save us nearly a million pounds.”

Residents will also be able to earn Recyclebank points which can be redeemed for special offers and discounts in shops, cafes, restaurants and leisure facilities.

Rob Crumbie, director of marketing and communications at Recyclebank, said: “In the neighbouring Royal Borough we’ve helped to grow the recycling rate by three times the national average during 2010/11 and we look forward to being able to help Wokingham Borough Council achieve similar improvements.”
